INDIANAPOLIS - A permanent memorial to the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, overlooking Indianapolis' White River Canal, will be dedicated locally on September 11, 2011. The centerpiece of the downtown monument will be a pair of 22-foot steel beams from the World Trade Center that arrived in Indiana last April. One of the final opportunities for Central Indiana residents to view the beams and be a part of the memorial to one of our nation's most daunting events, will be in front of Conseco Fieldhouse on the evening of Saturday, Aug. 27.

The beams will be on display outside Conseco Fieldhouse on Pennsylvania Street beginning at 5:00 p.m., through the end of the Indiana Fever's game with the Atlanta Dream, which tips at 7:00 p.m. Saturday's mobile display provides Indiana Fever fans and local residents with a final opportunity for personal tributes before the beams are planted permanently into the local memorial.

Project 9/11 Indianapolis was initiated by Indianapolis firefighter/paramedic Greg Hess, whose search and rescue team had stood at Ground Zero assisting in rescue and recovery efforts during the worst terrorist attacks ever committed on American soil. Hess drove a grass roots effort locally that has raised private funds to construct the monument. It will be completed in time for the 10th anniversary of those attacks.

Hess will be greeted by Fever Head Coach Lin Dunn, point guard Briann January and mascot Freddy Fever when the beams and mobile display open Saturday evening at 5:00 p.m.

Two weeks later, the 11,000-pound beams will become the centerpiece of Project 9/11 Indianapolis that will feature a pair of six-foot tall black granite walls inscribed with remembrances of the events in New York City, Washington, D.C., and Shanksville, Pa. Perched atop the beams will be a bronze, life-size sculpture of an American Bald Eagle, with wings outstretched and gazing east toward New York City.

A WNBA playoff participant in six straight seasons and seven times since 2002, the Eastern Conference-leading Indiana Fever continues its 12th season by hosting Back to School Night presented by Ivy Tech Community College when the Fever hosts the Atlanta Dream (7:00 p.m.). The first 4,000 fans to the game receive a Freddy Fever back pack courtesy of Kroger. For single-game and season ticket information, visit FeverBasketball.com or call (317) 917-2500.
