Traverse City Beach Bums News Release

FLORENCE, KY - The Traverse City Beach Bums dropped an 8-6 contest to the Florence Freedom in a seesaw affair to open a six-game roadtrip.

The Freedom grabbed a 2-0 lead by scoring a pair of two-out runs in the bottom of the third against Ryan Gehring. Garth McKinney hit his second double of the game to score Jeff Landry, and Ryan Basham plated McKinney with a single.

Traverse City opened a 4-2 advantage with four fifth inning runs. Kyle Maunus led off with his fifth homer of the season and Mike Epping followed by homering on the next pitch from Chris Ingoglia to tie the score. Brad Miller reached on an error with one out and Jeff Brown followed with a walk. Mike Goetz was credited with an infield single but Jeff Landry overran the ball at short enabling Miller to give the Beach Bums their first lead of the night. Steve Young capped the inning with an RBI single.

Garth McKinney tied the game with one swing in the fifth. Eddie Gonzalez drew a leadoff walk from Gehring and with two away McKinney belted his seventh homer of the season to tie the game. The contest wasn't tied long as Traverse City came back with two more runs in the sixth inning to bounce Ingoglia from the game. Kyle Maunus and Patrick Perry singled and both scored on a triple by Brad Miller that gave the Beach Bums a 6-4 edge.

Florence homered again in the sixth inning to tie the score. Angel Molina drew a leadoff walk and Nick Salotti hit a two-run homer. Salotti was the last batter Gehring faced as he lasted five innings and did not factor in the decision.

The difference in the game came in the seventh as Tim Grogan led off with a double against Beach Bums reliever Nick Pepper and scored on a sacrifice fly. Angel Molina added an RBI single later.

Traverse City tallied 11 hits and had the tying runs in scoring position against Florence closer Cody Castle in the ninth, but Castle got out to record his sixth save. Mike Goetz posted his third four-hit game of the season in the defeat. Kyle Maunus also tallied a pair of hits.

The Beach Bums (20-17) continue the series with the Freedom in a 2:05 pm matinee at Champion Window Field. RHP David Nathanson (6-1, 2.19) goes for the Beach Bums opposite Mike Rocco (0-2, 5.56).
