
Beach Bums Win Marathon at Gateway

SAUGET, IL - The Traverse City Beach Bums(29-38) and the Gateway Grizzlies(35-35), were tied at three after three, and stayed that way until the 12th, as the Bums won 7-4, taking the middle game of a two game series.
In the top of the second inning, and with two outs, Giancarlo Burgnoni walked, Gaby Juarbe doubled, and Jeff DeBlieux walked to load the bases. Marcos Derkes then hit a tough grounder to second for a base hit, scoring Brugnoni. Then, an error also scored Juarbe. Ryan Bottger followed with an RBI single, scoring DeBlieux, giving the Beach Bums a 3-0 lead.
Ben Waldip led off the bottom of the inning for Gateway with an infield single then, Sam Fischer hit a two-run homer, his eighth of the season, over the short wall in right, just out of the reach of DeBlieux, to bring them within one. With two outs in the third, Brandon Thomas rocked a solo shot to left for his ninth of the season, tying the game at three.
From there, the pitching took over the game. Both starters got no-decisions in spite of settling down. Also, The Bums relief combination of Jacob Lanning, Luke Barker, Joeanthony Rivera, James Ball, and Andrew Brockett, combined to throw six innings, allowing just one hit and one walk while striking out thirteen. In fact, both pitching staffs combined to strike out 34 hitters, 17 for each team.
After both teams squandered the international tie-breaker in the 11th, the Beach Bums made no mistake in the 12th. While trying to bunt DeBlieux to third to lead off the inning, he reached on a throwing error. Ryan Bottger followed with a walk to load the bases. Jose Vargas came up and blasted a grand slam, deep over the left field wall for his 10th homer of the season, giving the Bums the lead for good.
James Ball earned the win for the Beach Bums, wiggling out of the 11th inning allowing a hit and striking out two, to improve to 3-3 on the season. Kevin Jefferis started the 12th and did not record an out, suffering the loss the drop to 2-2. He allowed all four runs, two earned, on one hit and a walk.
Tomorrow night, the Beach Bums and the Gateway Grizzlies play the rubber game of this three game series. Will Landsheft gets the start for Gateway while Michael Shreves will try for series win for the Beach Bums. First pitch is scheduled for 8:05pm and Tom Willms will have the Miller Lite Pre-Game Show at 7:45pm, on 101.9- The Bay.

The Beach Bums Box Office & Gift Shop are now open with non-gameday hours of 10am to 6pm Monday through Friday, 10am to 4pm on Saturday. Wuerfel Park is closed on non-gameday Sundays. Stadium hours are extended on gamedays.
