Southern Illinois Miners News Release
MARION, ILL.- The Southern Illinois Miners fell behind early and the Lake Erie Crushers held off a late rally to win by a final score of 4-3, evening the midweek series at one game apiece.
Lake Erie scored three runs in the first inning against DAN LUDWIG to take a 3-0 lead. After Brendan Costantino singled and was thrown out trying to steal second base to end the first inning, Ludwig (7-2) would settle down, permitting just one baserunner from the first until the fifth inning. Meanwhile, former Miners right-hander Steve Hagen (4-4) retired the first fourteen batters he faced with six strikeouts, pitching a perfect game until the fifth inning, when the Miners got on the board thanks to a triple by STEVE MARINO followed by an RBI single by RILEY MOORE to make the score 3-1.
In the bottom of the sixth, Lake Erie added on to their lead with a two-out double by Eric Grabe to make the score 4-1 and chase Ludwig from the contest, but the Miners' bullpen was able to hold Lake Erie off the board the rest of the way. Southern Illinois then mounted a rally in the eighth inning. EDISON SANCHEZ led off with a single and after a fielder's choice and a walk by AARON GATES, SHANE KENNEDY singled to load the bases. CRAIG MASSEY then came through with an RBI single to cut the deficit to 4-2, and ALEX DE LEON followed with a sacrifice fly to make the score 4-3, but that would be the closest the Miners would get as they stranded the bases loaded in the frame.
Kennedy finished 2-for-4 in the contest, while Massey and Moore each went 1-for-4 with an RBI as the Miners dropped the matinee second contest against the Crushers. Ludwig allowed four runs in five and two-thirds innings to take just his second loss of the season, while Hagen pitched seven and one-third innings for Lake Erie, allowing three runs to get the win.
Southern Illinois will go for the series win in the rubber match on Thursday night at 6:05 p.m., with BROOKS TRUJILLO taking the mound against the Crushers' Mike Devine before the Miners return home for a six-game homestand.
