Traverse City Beach Bums News Release
TRAVERSE CITY, MI, FEBRUARY 23, 2007: The Traverse City Beach Bums continue to compile hard-throwing pitchers this off-season with the signing of right-handed pitcher Daniel Hawkins. Hawkins is a native of Tampa, Florida, and pitched for St. Leo University before signing a professional contract with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in 2005. The Angels started the 6'3" 200 pound Hawkins and his 94 mph fastball in the Pioneer League that season, where he blew away opposing hitters and finished with a 6-2 record, 3.39 ERA, and 58 strikeouts in 59 innings while holding opposing batters to a .240 average. The Angels promoted Hawkins to the Midwest League in 2006, and by mid-season had pitched well enough to earn another promotion to the Class A Advanced California League.
Hawkins will compete for a spot in the Beach Bums starting rotation and expects to have an immediate impact on the team.
The Beach Bums open their 2007 season on the road against their division rivals the Kalamazoo Kings, Wednesday May 23rd, before playing their home opener on May 25th against the Kings. It will be the first Fireworks Friday of the season. The team's gift shop is currently open for business from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday to help get Traverse City fans through the winter months.
