Midwest Sliders of Ypsilanti News Release
Slippery Rock, PA - The Slippery Rock Sliders professional baseball team announced the signing of right-handed pitcher Jon Oliver to a contract for the 2007 season. Oliver currently serves as the pitching coach at Wooster (Ohio) College, where he was named a NCAA Division III Second Team All-American in 2005. Oliver was also selected to the North Coast Athletic Conference All-Star teams during all four seasons he played at Wooster.
During his freshman season, Oliver was named NCAC Newcomer of the Year and was also named second-team all-conference after finishing with an 8-2 record and a 3.91 earned run average. Following the season, Oliver underwent Tommy John surgery to repair his injured right arm, but returned to the team in 2004, less than a year after surgery. He was again selected to second-team all conference after recording a 6-2 record and a 3.70 ERA. His junior season proved to bring more success as Oliver was named second-team All-American and pitcher of the year in the NCAC. He accumulated a 7-0 record with a 2.29 ERA, and 69 strikeouts in 78.2 innings. Oliver didn't allow an earned run in seven of his starts and recorded complete-game shutouts in three games in leading the Scots to a third place finish in the Division III Baseball Championships.
In 2006, Oliver's senior season, he repeated as NCAC pitcher-of-the-year after improving his numbers yet again. Oliver accumulated an 8-0 record, with a 1.83 ERA, and 69 strikeouts in 68 innings of work, leading the conference in ERA, tying for first in victories, and ranking second in strikeouts.
