TRAVERSE CITY, Mich.-B.J. Hagen, a right-handed pitcher from the University of North Carolina- Charlotte, has signed with the Traverse City Beach Bums.

Hagen, a native of Richmond, Va., set career highs in strikeouts, wins and innings pitched as a senior in 2008 at the University of North Carolina-Charlotte. The right-hander appeared in just under 170 innings in his career, totaling 105 strikeouts for the 49ers. A graduate of J.R. Tucker High School, Hagen led his prep squad to the state finals in 2002.

"Our reports on B.J. say that he is a hard-nosed competitor with an above average breaking ball and change-up," commented Wuerfel. "We see him competing for a job as the team's long relief specialist with the chance to be a spot starter. Having someone who can come into games early, when the starter has been knocked out, and give you three to four quality innings is tough to come by in the Frontier League and we think B.J. can do just that for us."

Hagen will report to spring training in early May. Traverse City will announce its 2009 roster before the season opener on May 22 at Kalamazoo. The 2009 Beach Bums open up their home slate on May 26 with a 7:05 p.m. game against the Southern Illinois Miners.
