Traverse City Beach Bums News Release
TRAVERSE CITY - The Traverse City Beach Bums have announced the signing of right-handed pitcher Stephen Read to a 2008 contract.
A Putnam, Illinois native, Read finished his college career NCAA Division II Missouri University of Science and Technology in 2007. Read had a terrific senior season for the Miners, pitching a single-season school record 77 innings with a 3.74 ERA, 10 walks, and 52 strikeouts, which tied another single-season school record. The 6'8" right-hander leaves Missouri S & T with his name all over the career record books including 1st in innings pitched (234), 3rd in games pitched (57), 2nd in career strikeouts (142), and 8th in career ERA (4.93).
"We had the opportunity to see Steve throw at a tryout in Texas and we liked what we saw," said Jason Wuerfel, the Beach Bums' Director of Baseball Operations. "He is a big, intimidating guy on the mound, throws a hard sinker in the upper 80s, and has a devastating split-finger. He has all the ability to be a very productive pitcher in the Frontier League and we are excited to bring him into camp."
Read currently resides in Texas where he works as a mechanical engineer.
