Traverse City Beach Bums News Release

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich.-- After two seasons in the Colorado Rockies organization, outfielder Brian Lapin has signed with the Traverse City Beach Bums for the 2009 season and will add another powerful bat to the squad's lineup.

"Brian is exactly the type of player we were looking for this off-season," said Jason Wuerfel, the Beach Bums director of baseball operations. "He is a big time power threat and can change the face of the game with one swing of the bat."

"He is also an experienced defensive player, extremely athletic for his 6'6" frame, and has good speed and range in the outfield," Wuerfel added. "He will be an exciting player to watch on both sides of the ball."

A product of Madera, Calif. by way of Fresno State University, Lapin spent last season with the Asheville (Tenn.) Tourists, the Rockies' mid-A affiliate. With the Tourists of the South Atlantic League, Lapin totaled 16 extra base hits, including six homeruns and 23 RBI in 55 games.

After being drafted in the 18th round of the 2007 MLB Draft, Lapin spent the 2007 season with the short-season Tri-City Dust Devils in Pasco, Wash., where he had a .379 slugging percentage, five doubles, five triples, a home run and 14 RBI before being promoted to Asheville.

Lapin played three seasons at Fresno State before being drafted by the Rockies. The right-hander captured first-team All-WAC, WAC Tournament MVP, and NCAA All-Regional Tournament honors in his final season as a Bulldog. Over his three seasons in Fresno, Lapin hit .320 with 14 homers, 35 doubles, five triples and 114 RBI.

The 2004 class valedictorian of Madera High School, Lapin was a baseball and basketball standout and was named first-team all conference in both sports before matriculating to Fresno State.

The Beach Bums open their 2009 home schedule when they host the Southern Illinois Miners at 7:05 p.m. on May 26.
