Beach Bums Hang on for Win against Freedom

FLORENCE, KY- The Traverse City Beach Bums(27-27), for the second straight game, used some two out, ninth inning magic, this time against the Florence Freedom(27-27), winning tonight's series opener by a final score of 5-4.

After a scoreless first inning, Florence broke the ice with an RBI double by Ricky Ramirez Jr. The Beach Bums responded in the top of the third to take the lead. Noah McGowan led off with single to left then Ryan Kemp sacrificed him to second with a bunt. Isaac Benard tied the game with an RBI single to center for a 1-1 score. Will Kengor gave the Bums the lead on a two run rocket over the right field wall for his ninth homer of the season.

In the bottom of the inning, Florence started to chip away with an RBI double by Jordan Brower to pull within one. Florence tied the game up in the sixth on a Keivan Burges sacrifice fly. In the top of the ninth, with two away, Luke Lowery reached on an infield single that caromed off of the front of the mound. Connor Oliver then bashed his first home run as a Beach Bum, and second of the season for a 5-3 lead. Jacob Wark pulled the Freedom within one in the bottom of the frame on a sacrifice fly, but the Bums held on.

Both starting pitcher, Matt Murphy and Chuck Weaver were on point, each allowing three run, but left with no-decisions. Kenneth Knudsen earned the win with two perfect innings of relief, along with two strikeouts, improving his record to 4-0. Johnathon Tripp is dealt the loss to fall to 3-1 after giving up two runs on three hits in the ninth. John Michael Knighton gave up a run on two hits but nabbed his ninth save of the season.

Wednesday morning, the Beach Bums and Florence Freedom get right back to work for the second game of this week's three game set. Getting the start for Florence is Cody Gray while Luke DeVenney makes his professional debut for the Beach Bums. First pitch is scheduled for 10:35am and Tom Willms will have the call, starting with the Budweiser pregame show, at 10:15. You can listen along from anywhere in the world at TCBeachBums.com.
