Traverse City Beach Bums News Release

SAUGET, IL - The Traverse City Beach Bums(28-38) could not hold a 3-2 lead in the ninth, falling to the Gateway Grizzlies35-34), 4-3, who take the opener of a three game series.

After a scoreless first couple of innings, Gateway's Cody Livesay led off the bottom of the third with a single to left. Seth Heck followed with a single of his own, moving Livesay to third. After Heck moved to second on a ground out, Craig Massoni drove them both home with a two run RBI single to center, giving the Grizzlies a 2-0 lead.

With one out in the fifth, Will Kengor, getting his first action since the River City series, singled to center, then stole second. Giancarlo Brugnoni then blasted a two-run home run over the right field wall for his eighth of the season, tying the game up at two. In the seventh, Kengor led off with his second single of the day and advanced to second on a Brugnoni walk. Kendall Patrick successfully bunted them both into scoring position, and Jeff DeBlieux gave the Bums the lead on an RBI sacrifice fly.

Tyler Tewell led off the bottom of the ninth for Gateway by getting hit by a pitch, then Massoni singled. Ben Waldrip was next and struck out but the final pitch of the at-bat got away from the catcher for a wild pitch and advanced the runners to second and third. Blake Brown was then intentionally walked to load the bases. Zach Lavy laced a liner to left field and although Ryan Bottger made a great diving catch, Tewell's pinch-runner, Sam Fischer, scored to tie the game. Logan Davis then won the game on a bloop RBI base hit.

Although Kramer Champlin was great, hurling eight innings, allowing eight hits, two runs, two walks, and three strikeouts, he didn't factor into the decision. Kevin Jeffris retired the last seven batters of the game, striking out three, to earn the win and improve to 2-1. Andrew Brockett suffered the loss to drop to 3-4, after allowing two runs on two hits, a hit-by-pitch, an intentional walk, while fanning one.
