MARION, ILL- The Southern Illinois Miners got seven outstanding innings from JARETT MILLER and scored four runs in the fifth and sixth innings en route to a 4-0 win over the Lake Erie Crushers on Tuesday night at All Pro Freight Stadium in Avon, Ohio.

The game was scoreless through the first four innings as Miller (6-3) and Lake Erie left-hander Stetson Nelson (4-5) went toe-to-toe. The Miners were able to break through in the fifth inning, when FRANCISCO ROSARIO singled to lead off the frame and was sacrificed to second by AARON GATES. After moving to third on a groundout, CRAIG MASSEY came up clutch with an RBI single on the first pitch he saw to give the Miners a 1-0 lead.

In the sixth inning, a leadoff walk by STEVE MARINO and an error put runners at first and second with no one out before TOBY DEMELLO lined a double into the left field corner, making the score 2-0 and chasing Nelson from the game. Two batters later, Gates shot a double down the line past the third baseman to score both EDISON SANCHEZ and DeMello and balloon the lead to 4-0.

That was all Miller needed, as the right-hander allowed three hits, all singles, and one walk in seven shutout innings of work on the mound. He also struck out six batters on the game, including the side in the seventh inning, before KYLE TINIUS and EVAN MOTT retired the final six Lake Erie batters to cap the shutout. It was the Miners' eighth shutout win of the season and third in 15 games since the all-star break.

The Miners will look to win the series in the second game on Wednesday morning at 10:05 a.m., when they send DAN LUDWIG to the mound against former Miner Steve Hagen in the midweek matinee.

The Southern Illinois Miners are the back-to-back Frontier League East Division Champions and the 2012 Frontier League Champions. They have been awarded the Frontier League Organization of the Year award three times since their inception, and also set a new Frontier League attendance record in 2007, their inaugural season.
