Traverse City Beach Bums News Release
The Traverse City Beach Bums'(33-44) put the tying run on second, and the winning run at the plate, but couldn't complete the comeback, falling to the Washington Wild Things(38-39), 5-4.
After a scoreless first inning, Elijah Trail led off the bottom of the second inning with a walk. Steven Patterson followed with a single to right, extending his season-high hitting streak to eight games. Later in the inning Kendall Patrick walked the load the bases. Two batters later, Marco Derkes snuck a single up the middle, scoring both Trail and Patterson giving Traverse City a 2-0 lead.
It took until the fourth but Washington got on the board when David Popkins took the first pitch he saw, over the right field wall. With two away, the Wild Things rallied and added a couple more runs on RBI singles by Andrew Heck and Chris Grayson, giving them the lead. The teams traded runs in the fifth when Popkins, again hit a solo homer, this time to deep left-center, for Washington. Will Kengor then drove in Derkes, who led off the frame with a walk and stole a base. The Beach Bums still trailed by one.
Washington picked up an important insurance run in the eighth inning on a Grayson RBI double that drove in Jamodrick McGruder. The Beach Bums valiant comeback began with two out in the bottom of the ninth when Kendall Patrick walked. After Casey Rodrigue replaced Patrick at first, Jeff DeBlieux drove him home with an RBI double down the right field line. Derkes followed with a deep fly ball to left but Heck was able to chase it down on the warning track to end the game.
Washington starter, Matt Fraudin, earned the win tonight with a six inning effort, allowing three runs on five hits. He walked five but he fanned eight on his way to a 6-6 record. Michael Shreves was strong through three but gave up four runs on nine hits and three walks while striking out two, in his six inning stint. He falls to 2-8. Devon Davis gave up a run in the ninth but was able to survive the inning for his fifth save of the season.
