Marion, Ill. - The Southern Illinois Miners swept a doubleheader on Wednesday night against the Gateway Grizzlies at Rent One Park, winning 8-2 in game 1 behind Jarett Miller and a seven-run fourth inning before scoring three times in the first and three more times in the sixth inning of game two to improve their record to 53-27 on the season and clinch the midweek series by winning the first two games.

In the first game, the Miners got on top on an RBI groundout by Francisco Rosario in the second against Adam Eggnatz (6-4), taking a 1-0 lead, but two innings later they would explode and put the game away. In the fourth, three straight singles by Craig Massey, Steve Marino and Toby DeMello loaded the bases for Rosario, who hit a line drive down the left field line that stayed fair and plated two runs to make it 3-0.

After Aaron Gates walked to load the bases, against reliever Jon Pusateri, Brandon Cummins hit a line drive into left-center field. Gateway's Brandon Thomas mis-read the baseball, which sailed over his head and went all the way towards the outfield fence on what ended up being an inside-the-park grand slam home run for a 7-0 Miners lead. It was Cummins' first home run as a professional, with Alex De Leon adding an RBI single later in the inning for the final Miners run.

Miller (8-3), meanwhile, continued his strong pitching by going the distance, allowing just two runs on seven hits to earn the win on the mound. Rosario finished with a career-high three RBIs while Cummins notched a career-best four runs driven in as the Miners took the first game.

In game two, the Miners wasted no time, sending all nine batters to the plate against Will Landsheft (6-7) and scoring three runs on RBI singles by Massey, De Leon and Riley Moore. Gateway would get a run back in the second inning and then pulled within one on a throwing error in the fifth which also put the tying and potential go-ahead runs into scoring position. But Rich Mascheri got out of the jam with a flyout, and the Miners would add on with three runs in the sixth, including a two-run single by Gates, to roll to victory and sweep the doubleheader.

Southern Illinois will go for the series sweep on Thursday night at 7:05 p.m., with Brooks Trujillo taking the ball for the Miners against Gateway right-hander Vince Molesky.
