
Beach Bums Drop Opener against Crushers

TRAVERSE CITY, MI - The Traverse City Beach Bums(37-49) dropped the first game of their last home stand of 2016, to the Lake Erie Crushers(43-45), by the final score of 12-5.
Max Casper got the Crushers on the board in the second with an RBI single to center and a second run scored due to an error on the play. Casper then scored on an RBI sacrifice fly by Parker Norris to make it a 3-0 game. The Beach Bums scored their first run in the third inning after Jose Vargas tripled, then scored on an Elijah Trail sacrifice fly.
With two outs in the fifth, Lake Erie made it a four run advantage when Sean Hurley hit a two-run homer, his sixth of the season. In the bottom of the inning, Traverse City was able to pull within one run. Giancarlo Brugnoni led off with a double to the center field wall. He then scored on Kendall Patrick's RBI single. Casey Rodrigue followed with a bunt single just past the pitcher. The second baseman, Casper's throw got away for an error to bring runners to second and third. Two batters later, Ryan Bottger drove them both home with a double, and it was 5-4.
Lake Erie pulled away for good in the sixth, putting up three in the inning, all with two outs. Bums' reliever James Ball walked four batters in a row to bring in a run then, after a pitching change, Eric Grabe plated two with a single to center. Rodrigue drove in the Bums' fifth run on a single after Steven Patterson walked earlier in the inning, but the Crushers kept on adding on. In the eighth, it was Hurley with a two-run single, and in the ninth, Robb Paller hit an RBI double and Connor Oliver hit an RBI single to finish the game off.
Stetson Nelson, although he wiggled in and out of trouble, earned the win for Lake Erie, to improve to 6-6. He gave up five runs on ten hits, in six innings, walking two and fanning eight. Michael Shreves made it through five but suffered the loss to fall to 3-9. He gave up five runs, three of them earned, on eight hits and three walks, and struck out two.
The Beach Bums and the Lake Erie Crushers continue this weekend's three game series tomorrow night. On the mound for Lake Erie will be Josh Heddinger and Benjamin Libuda gets the call for the Beach Bums. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05pm and Tom Willms will have the call starting at 6:45pm with the Miller Lite pre-game show on 101.9- The Bay.
