Traverse City Beach Bums News Release
TRAVERSE CITY, Mich.-- The Traverse City Beach Bums have acquired INF Kyle Eveland from the Sioux Falls Canaries of the American Association for INF Andrew Stafford and LHP David Hurst. Eveland, 22, made his professional debut with the Sioux Falls Canaries last summer after going undrafted out of Chico State University in California. In 79 at-bats, Eveland hit.266 with a.316 slugging percentage and.359 on-base percentage, with 12 walks and just 12 strikeouts. A defensive specialist, Eveland made just two errors in 64 chances last summer for the Canaries.
His senior year at Chico, Eveland led the Wildcats to an NCAA tournament appearances by hitting.347 with 20 walks and just 19 strikeouts. The 5'11" 190-pound infielder was drafted out of the College of the Canyons CC by the Milwaukee Brewers in 2006 in the 43rd round, but chose to head to Chico State instead of signing. Eveland's brother, Dana, is a pitcher in the big leagues with the Oakland Athletics.
"Beach Bums' manager, Gregg Langbehn, and I have had our eye on Eveland for a while this off-season and we're excited to add him to the roster," said Beach Bums' Director of Baseball Operations Jason Wuerfel. "He is an advanced defensive player at 3rd base, shortstop, and 2nd base, but he also knows how to handle the bat. He can draw walks, put the ball in play, and won't strike out much. He is exactly the type of player we try to find for our ballpark, which benefits teams that can pitch, play defense, and hit situationally. Eveland will still be considered a rookie in our league next year, which is important as we begin to piece together our roster."
To complete the deal, the Beach Bums send LHP David Hurst and INF Andrew Stafford to the Sioux Falls Canaries. Hurst, who will turn 26 in May, was the Beach Bums' 1st round draft pick in the Frontier League Tryout Camp in 2009. In his only season in Traverse City, Hurst was 3-3 with a 3.32 ERA in 43.1 innings, with 17 walks and 45 strikeouts. Originally drafted by the LA Angels in 2007 out of the University of Florida, Hurst pitched one season before sitting out 2008 due to shoulder surgery. Stafford joined the Beach Bums after going undrafted out of Oakland University in 2009, and hit.217 during his time in Traverse City.
The Traverse City Beach Bums are entering their fifth season of play in 2010 with the home opener scheduled for Friday, May 28th versus the Oakland County Cruisers. The Beach Bums will play 54 of their 96 games at home in 2010. Season tickets are now on sale -- please phone 231-943-0100.
