BBVA Stadium to Host Three Doubleheaders in Concacaf Gold Cup Group Stage
May 13, 2021 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
Houston Dynamo FC News Release
HOUSTON - Concacaf announced earlier today that BBVA Stadium will host three doubleheaders in the 2021 Gold Cup tournament in July.
BBVA Stadium will host Group D for two doubleheaders to open the tournament. Group D is headlined by Honduras, who returns to Houston for their fourth (2013, 2017 and 2019) appearance in the region's flagship international tournament. The group includes Panama, who represented the region in the 2018 FIFA Men's World Cup and reached the quarterfinals of the 2019 Gold Cup. Grenada returns to the Gold Cup for the first time since 2011 and Qatar is the first tournament guest since Colombia in 2005. Qatar also enters the competition as the reigning Asian Football Confederation Asian Cup champions.
"We are absolutely thrilled to host the most competitive group of the tournament in Houston," said Executive Vice President and General Manager of BBVA Stadium, Juan Rodriguez. "Honduras is a perennial contender for the cup and they have a slight home field advantage here at BBVA Stadium. Then you look at Panama and Qatar, two national teams that played at the highest level in the previous cycle. We also have Grenada, they want to make a statement in their first visit to BBVA Stadium, so every game is going to be competitive. We are thrilled to offer our fans that type of international competition."
Tickets for all Group Stage matches will go on sale to the general public on May 20 at 10:00 a.m. local, via www.GoldCup.org. To receive information about the 2021 Concacaf Gold Cup and for an exclusive presale opportunity sign up here.
Group D play begins play at BBVA Stadium on Tuesday, July 13 with Qatar versus Panama at 6 p.m. CT followed by Honduras versus Granada at 8 p.m. Matchday two at BBVA Stadium is scheduled for Saturday, July 17 and begins with Grenada versus Qatar at 6:30 p.m. The doubleheader on July 17 ends with Panama versus Honduras at 8:30 p.m. CT.
Group play comes to an end on July 20, and in an exciting football first development to this year's edition of Gold Cup, each group's final group stage matches will be played simultaneously. This is to ensure an even more compelling spectacle as the teams compete to reach the Knockout Stage. BBVA Stadium's final doubleheader will begin with a match from Group C between Suriname and a team to be determined by the preliminary tournament in Florida from July 2-6. Honduras will face Qatar at 8 p.m. CT on July 20 at BBVA Stadium in the final Group D game in Houston.
Houston is one of seven metropolitan markets selected to host matches in the 2021 edition of the tournament. Houston will also crown the last finalist on July 29 as NRG Stadium hosts the semifinals at 9 p.m. CT.
The 2021 Concacaf Gold Cup is the fifth tournament to feature games at BBVA Stadium, and the venue has hosted a match in every edition of the competition since 2013.
