Baysox Starters Shine In All-Star Game

(Manchester, NH) - Baysox pitchers Brad Bergesen and David Hernandez each worked scoreless innings but the Northern All-Stars edged the Southern team, 5-3 Wednesday night. Lou Montanez participated in an exciting finish to the Irving Oil Homerun Derby during the game, coming up just short to the hometown boy Travis Snider, who plays outfield for the hosting Fisher Cats.

Bergesen was chosen to start the game for the Southern squad and did so the way he has all season for the Baysox. The ten-game winner retired the side in order with three fly balls on just ten pitches. Bowie starter David Hernandez pitched a scoreless bottom of the fourth, giving up just one hit and striking out a batter. Baysox infielder Jeff Nettles entered the game in the sixth inning and was hitless in just one trip to the plate.

Baysox outfielder Lou Montanez reached the finals of the homerun derby before the game began, then took part in the final round during a stoppage of play in the middle of the second inning. Montanez started slow in the final round, but hit a flurry of late homeruns to post a total of six. It would not be enough to beat Travis Snider, who has hit 18 homeruns this season between the Fisher Cats and the Dunedin Blue Jays. Snider came up after Montanez and caught fire, blasting seven long balls to capture the victory.

The Southern Division took the lead in the top of the third inning on a solo homerun by Reading outfielder Greg Golson. The Northern Division tied it up at 1-1 in the bottom of the inning on a wild pitch by Danny Christensen that allowed Fisher Cats catcher Brian Jeroloman to score.

The South looked to be in good position when Erie first baseman Ryan Roberson hit a solo shot in the top of the fourth, but the North struck back. In the bottom of the sixth, New Britain third baseman Luke Hughes blasted a three-run homerun to give the North a commanding 4-1 lead.

The teams exchanged runs again in the eighth inning. Reading shortstop Jason Donald scored for the South when Roberson broke up a double play with runners on the corners and one out. Connecticut second baseman Olmo Rosario answered for the North in the bottom of the inning, scoring on a ground-rule double by Trenton outfielder Austin Jackson to close out the scoring at 5-3.
