Three Curve Players to Participate in Tonight's E.L. All-Star Game

ALTOONA- Three Altoona Curve players will participate in tonight's Eastern League All-Star Game at Merchantsauto.com Stadium in Manchester, New Hampshire, home of the New Hampshire Fisher Cats. Representing the Curve and Pittsburgh Pirates in the E.L. All-Star Game will be pitchers Pat Bresnehan and Josh Shortslef and first baseman Jason Delaney.
Previously announced all-stars, infielder Shelby Ford and pitcher Yoslan Herrera, will not be attending the game. Ford was placed on the Curve Disabled List Saturday with a high ankle sprain, while Herrera is currently with the Pittsburgh Pirates after being recalled Saturday for his major league debut against St. Louis.
Bresnehan is 0-1 with six saves and a 4.50 ERA (32.0 IP/16 ER) in 25 relief appearances entering the All-Star Break. The right-hander has limited opposing Eastern League hitters to just a .223 batting average and his six saves in six opportunities leads the Curve bullpen. Drafted by Pittsburgh in the 5th round of the 2006 First-Year Player Draft, Bresnehan is in his third season in the Pirates' organization and is the youngest player (23 years, 2 months) on Altoona's current 24-man roster. The Sherborn, Massachusetts native played three seasons of college baseball at Arizona State University before making his pro debut in the Bucs' system with short-season Williamsport (A) in 2006.
Delaney enters the break as the only Eastern League player to have appeared in each of his team's games. The first baseman has appeared in all 95 games, hitting .302 with 17 doubles, three triples, seven home runs and 41 RBI. His 59 walks and .410 on-base percentage lead all Curve batters. Delaney, 25, is in his fourth season in the Pirates' organization after originally being drafted in the 12th round of the 2005 Draft out of Boston College, where he set a school record for hits and was a two-time All-Big East Conference selection. The native of Hanson, MA will be playing in his second league All-Star Game. In 2007, he represented the Lynchburg Hillcats in the Class-A Carolina/California League All-Star Game in Stockton, California and went 2-for-4 with a home run.
Shortslef was named as a late addition to the E.L. All-Star Game last week. The left-hander has turned in a solid first season as a reliever with Altoona after spending both the 2006 and '07 seasons as a starting pitcher. In 17 games, Shortslef is 3-1 with a 2.79 ERA (38.2 IP/12 ER) and has struck out 34 batters in 38 2/3 innings. Drafted by Pittsburgh in the sixth round of the 2000 June Draft out of Hannibal High School in Upstate New York, the 6-4, 250 pounder is in his ninth season in the Pirates' system.

The three Curve all-stars will re-join their teammates Thursday at Blair County Ballpark for the opening game of an eight-day, nine-game homestand against the Harrisburg Senators (AA/Nationals) at 7:05 p.m. After four games against the Senators, Altoona will welcome the first-place Akron Aeros (AA/Indians) for a five-game series, which includes a 5:35 p.m. doubleheader on Monday.
