RAINES CONTINUES TORRID START, BUT BAYSOX FALL FROM FIRST PLACE OF Tim Raines, Jr. (pictured left) continued his hot start to the 2003 season, but the Baysox fell out of first place of the Eastern League's Southern Division this past week. Bowie endured a six-game losing streak from April 26-May 2, before taking the final two games in Binghamton over the weekend. Back-to-back splendid starts by Jacobo Sequea and Matt Riley helped the Baysox to victory over the B-Mets on Saturday and Sunday. On Saturday, Sequea tossed 6.2 innings of scoreless ball, allowing only three hits as the Baysox won 3-0.
The next afternoon, Riley was equally as impressive in allowing only two hits and no runs in 6.1 innings. He struck out seven and walked two as the Baysox took the rubber match, 5-3, in 11 innings. Bowie dropped two games in Erie to start the week and finished their road trip with a 8-4 victory this afternoon. Raines' .341 average leads the team and is tenth best in the EL. His 13 stolen bases lead the league. Thru Tuesday, the Baysox (14-14) were 1.5 games behind division-leading Akron.
