Erie BayHawks News Release
Erie, Pennsylvania - The Erie BayHawks were able to sneak past the visiting Fort Wayne Mad Ants on a three point play by Mychel Thompson with 6.8 seconds remaining in the game. The win boosts Erie's (25-21) playoff chances with four games remaining in the regular season.
Erie was able to rush out to a seven point lead midway through the first quarter before Fort Wayne (12-34) stormed back to take a two point lead into the second quarter. The Mad Ants helped their cause by grabbing six offensive rebounds in the quarter, compared to Erie's one. In the second quarter, the lead swelled to eight but Erie battled back and took a one point advantage into the break.
The BayHawks maintained the lead for the duration of the third frame, despite Fort Wayne shooting nearly 60% from the field during the quarter. Thompson helped lead the charge with ten points in the stanza and the BayHawks took a four point lead into the game's final twelve minutes. The Erie lead grew to eight before Fort Wayne was able to tie the game at 88 with six minutes to go. The BayHawks trailed by four points with 40 seconds remaining before Kyle Goldcamp knocked down a left handed hook shot to cut the lead to two. With nine seconds left, Thompson intercepted the Thomas Baudinet pass and drove to the hoop. While shooting a lay-up, he was fouled by Ron Howard and Ramon Harris blocked the shot while it was on the way down, resulting in a goaltending violation. Thompson calmly stepped to the line and knocked down the free throw. The BayHawks then forced a tough shot to end the game with a 103-102 victory.
Thompson paced the BayHawks with 19 points, four rebounds, four steals and four blocks. Joey Graham chipped in with 18 points and 6 rebounds. Kyle Goldcamp (15 points and 9 rebounds), D.J. Kennedy (12 points, eight rebounds and eight assists), Kyle Spain (12 points) and Jeremy Green (11 points) also added double figure point totals for the BayHawks. Fort Wayne was led by Ron Howard, who scored 21 points off the bench. Six other Mad Ants also recorded double digit point totals.
The two teams will return to the court tomorrow night at 7:00 PM. The first 1,000 fans through the doors will receive a free green t-shirt, courtesy of Erie County Recycling.
