Erie, Pennsylvania, Friday, December 27 - The Erie BayHawks fell short against the Rio Grande Valley Vipers at Erie Insurance Arena on Friday night. Despite posting team season highs in multiple categories, including total points scored, the Vipers played well down the stretch and downed Erie by a final score of 125-119.
The BayHawks (1-9) posted a season-high for points in a quarter as they jumped out to a 42-32 lead after the first frame. Justin Brownlee led the way for Erie with 15 points and 4 rebounds while Chris Johnson paced the Vipers (11-2) with 11 points.
Erie led by as many as 16 in the second quarter, their largest lead of the game, before Rio Grande Valley cut the deficit to just five at the intermission.
The Vipers took their first lead since early in the first quarter when Johnson connected on three free throws at the 4:45 mark of the third stanza. Erie closed the quarter on a 12-5 run to hold a one point advantage into the final twelve minutes.
After trailing much of the fourth quarter, Rio Grande Valley captured the lead once again with 3:33 remaining in the game. The two teams traded baskets before Rio Grande Valley's Robert Covington buried a three-pointer to put the Vipers ahead for good. The BayHawks were held scoreless in the final two minutes and fell by a final score of 125-119.
Ricky Davis finished with a team-high 26 points for Erie and added eight rebounds and five assists. Brownlee finished with a season-high 21 points and 15 rebounds and Jeremy Tyler added 20 points and eight rebounds. Johnson scored a game-high 29 points for the Vipers and added 11 rebounds. Troy Daniels pitched in with 27 points and nine rebounds and Covington tallied 25 points and seven rebounds.
Rio Grande Valley heads to Fort Wayne to face the Mad Ants tomorrow night while Erie will square off against the Charge in Canton on Sunday evening.
