Erie, Pennsylvania, Friday, January 10 - The Erie BayHawks led wire-to-wire en route to their third win in four games against Canton on Friday night. Erie started the game with an 11-2 run, aided by two three-pointers from Scott Suggs and never looked back as they downed Canton by a final score of 113-109.
The BayHawks (4-12) shot 58% from the floor in the first quarter and held a 27-22 lead after one frame. Suggs led all scorers with eight points during the period. The BayHawks controlled the second quarter and took a 56-45 advantage into the break. Terence Jennings scored nine of his 14 first half points to pace Erie in the second quarter.
The BayHawks held their largest lead of the game when Justin Brownlee sunk a free throw to put Erie ahead by 18 with 5:55 remaining in the third. The Charge (11-7) fought back in the final stanza, connecting on six three-pointers during the frame as they poured in 41 points in the final twelve minutes. Erie connected on six of eight free throws down the stretch and polished off the Charge by a final of 113-109. The win was Erie's first in six tries against Canton this season. Erie shot a season-high 53.9% from the floor and 56.3% from three-point range in.
Suggs paced Erie for the seventh time this season, finishing with 24 points on 8 of 10 shooting, including tying a season-high with five three-pointers. Jennings (18), Brownlee (17 points & 12 rebounds), Chris Smith (12), Ricky Davis (14) and Mustafa Shakur (10 points & six assists) also chipped in with double-figure scoring efforts for Erie. Jorge Gutierrez led Canton with 26 points, seven assists and six rebounds. He was aided by strong efforts from Bo Spencer (17 points, eight assists & 7 rebounds), Robert Hite (17) and Kevin Jones (16 points & nine rebounds).
The two teams will square off again tomorrow night at the Erie Insurance Arena.
