Erie BayHawks News Release
Erie, Pennsylvania, Monday, February 28, 2011 - The Erie BayHawks today acquired guard Jermaine Beal from the Austin Toros as part of a three-team deal. Erie sent guard Derek Raivio to the Fort Wayne Mad Ants, and Fort Wayne dealt Austin their third round pick in the 2011 NBA Development League Draft.
"Derek is a great kid and I thoroughly enjoyed having him on our team," said BayHawks head coach Jay Larranaga. "I believe the trade provides a good situation for Derek and wish him all the best."
Beal (6-3, 205) is a 23-year-old rookie from Vanderbilt University who was acquired by the Toros via the available player pool on December 1. He appeared in 29 games this season with Austin and averaged 6.9 points and 2.2 assists in 18.7 minutes per game.
As a senior at Vanderbilt, Beal lead the Commodores in scoring (14.6 points), assists (3.1) three-point field goals (72), and minutes played (32.5 per game), and was voted the school's 2009-2010 Male Athlete of the Year by school officials. Beal finished his college career with 91 victories in his four seasons, making him the winningest player in the history of Vanderbilt men's basketball.
Beal is expected to be in uniform for the BayHawks when they face conference rival Iowa on Tuesday at 7:00pm ET at Tullio Arena.
