Mobile BayBears News Release
PEARL, MS -The Mobile BayBears improved to 2-0 on the 2014 campaign with a come-from-behind 7-5 win over the Mississippi Braves Friday night at Trustmark Park. Mobile scored the first run of the game for the second night in a row but fell behind for the first time this season. The BayBears rallied back, scoring six runs in the final three frames. They have now won nine straight over the M-Braves dating back to last year.
The BayBears struck first after Michael Freeman led off the game with a walk and scored on a fielder's choice. Mobile would then go on a five inning scoring drought while the M-Braves took their first lead of the season. Mississippi tied the game in the bottom of the fifth, when Gustavo Nunez doubled and then scored on an error at first. The M-Braves scored again in the sixth inning with two runs off of BayBears LHP Andrew Chafin who settled for a no decision, allowing just two earned runs on six hits in five innings on the mound.
Mobile and Mississippi both traded runs in the seventh inning, giving the M-Braves a 4-2 lead going into the eighth. In the top of the eighth, with runners on first and second, Sean Jamieson laid down a sacrifice bunt that was mishandled by Mississippi RHP James Hoyt (0-1) when he threw the ball into right field attempting to get Jamieson out at first which allowed the BayBears to pull within one run. The BayBears then tied the game at four when Tom Belza grounded out to score Peralta from third and Raywilly Gomez RBI single scored Jamieson to give Mobile a 5-4 lead.
Peralta extended the BayBears lead to 7-4 with a two-run homer to deep right field in the top of the ninth. The M-Braves would score one run in the bottom of the inning on a Matt Lipka RBI double but Jake Barrett would earn his first save of 2014, allowing just the one run on two hits and a strikeout in one inning of work. The win was credited to LHP Patrick Schuster who recorded the final out of the seventh and Mobile took the lead in the following half inning.
The BayBears and Braves continue their series on Saturday at 6 PM. RHP Mike Lee (0-0, 0.00) makes his first start of the year against RHP Williams Perez (0-0, 0.00) for the M-Braves. Mobile begins their home schedule on Wednesday, April 9 at 7:05 PM against the Montgomery Biscuits. Tickets are on sale now by calling 251.479.BEAR or online at MobileBayBears.com.
