ZEBULON, N.C. - Solid pitching, better defense and a couple timely hits paced the BayBears over the Carolina Mudcats on Saturday night at Five County Stadium in a 2-1 victory that extended the BayBears' advantage in the South Division wild card lead to five games over Montgomery.

Josh Collmenter (7-2) fired off seven solid innings in his first start with the BayBears (67-55, 31-23) since July 6. He struck out six in the contest while walking nobody and even helped himself at the plate to put the BayBears on top in the fifth inning.

Ollie Linton cracked a two-out double off Carolina (54-70, 24-31) starter Scott Carroll and came home when Collmenter lined a two-bagger to right-center field that skidded past center fielder Denis Phipps and rolled to the fence.

Carolina would stay behind until the bottom of the seventh when Chris Denove capped off a 3-for-3 night by doubling to left-center field. He advanced to third on a wild pitch with no outs. Jake Kahauelio grounded out to second, keeping Denove at third, but Jose Castro rolled a ball down the third base line in a good enough spot to bring home Denove, tying the game.

Carroll gave way to Ruben Medina (3-1) in the top of the eighth, and Evan Frey greeted him with a single to right-center. Frey stole second and third before crossing the plate on a base hit to left by Bryan Byrne, which made him the BayBears' all-time franchise leader in career RBI with 148.

Bryan Woodall tossed a scoreless bottom of the eighth before Daniel Stange (S, 8) finished the contest in the ninth. He did allow a single and a walk, but Kahaulelio bounced into a 6-4-3 double play up the middle to close the threat.

The BayBears finish their five-game set with the Mudcats on Sunday afternoon at 1:00 before moving on to Chattanooga for a four-game series on Monday night. They return to Hank Aaron Stadium to host the Huntsville Stars on Thursday, August 26, at 7:05 p.m. For tickets, which start at $5 for kids and $7 for adults, please call (251) 479-BEAR or log on to www.mobilebaybears.com.
