Mobile BayBears News Release

Mobile, Ala. – The Mobile BayBears were cruising right along against the Tennessee Smokies Monday night, but had two late scares, only to hold on 6-3 in the finale of their four-game series at Hank Aaron Stadium.

The BayBears jumped out to a 6-0 lead, in front of 1,803 fans, through the fifth inning Monday night. The Smokies however, did not go down quietly. Tennessee scored three times in the eighth and brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth.

Rico Washington got the scoring started as he hit his 14th homerun of the season in the first inning. The two-run shot also brought home Todd Donovan who had beat out a bunt single just a batter before.

Freddy Guzman drove in Humberto Quintero from second with a smash off of Smokies shortstop John Nelson's glove, giving the BayBears a 3-0 lead after two innings. Bobby Scales added a run for Mobile with a sacrifice fly in the third scoring Washington.

Jake Gautreau completed the BayBears scoring in the fifth as he hit a two-run homer over the left field wall. The homer brought in Scales and was Gautreau's 13th of the season.

BayBears starter Roger Deago was outstanding in his five innings of work. Deago (8-7) allowed just four hits while striking out four in his five shutout frames. After R.D. Spiehs worked two scoreless innings, the Smokies made things interesting.

J.J. Trujillo came out to start the eighth and allowed three runs on four Tennessee hits, while retiring just two hitters. Bryan Gaal came in to strikeout Bucky Jacobsen, the Southern League's leading homerun hitter, who represented the game-tying run.

Gaal earned his second save of the season, though he would again face the tying run in the ninth.

The BayBears (25-25) now head to second place Birmingham (26-23) trailing first place Huntsville by just two games. Duncan McAdoo (3-7; 4.53) will start on the mound for Mobile against the Barons Mitch Wylie (3-5; 4.64). Game time for Tuesday is set for 7:00.
