Stars' Bullpen Shines in 5-2 Win

August 11, 2003 - Southern League (SL1)
Huntsville Stars News Release

Jackson, TN – With no starter available, Huntsville's bullpen shut down the West Tenn offense, and the Stars rolled to a 5-2 win on Monday afternoon at Pringles Park. Huntsville (27-23, 67-51) gained a split of the four-game series and pulled even with Southern League West leader Birmingham, pending the outcome of the Barons' game at Chattanooga Monday night.

Jeff Hundley, making his third appearance since joining Huntsville, started with four scoreless innings, allowing just five hits and one walk while fanning two. Brian Adams added four shutout frames before hitting a snag in the ninth. The Jaxx scored two unearned runs, and closer Mike Adams entered with two on and two out to face Jason Dubois, West Tenn's top run producer. Adams needed two pitches to retire Dubois on a popout to short for his 12th save. Brian Adams (3-1) picked up the win, permitting two unearned runs on four hits and three walks with four strikeouts over 4 2/3 innings.

"We got a good spot start from Hundley, and Brian gave us four scoreless before he tired in the ninth," Stars manager Frank Kremblas said. "Then Mike came in and threw two pitches and got us out of there.

The Stars' offense scored early and often against Jaxx starter Jae-kuk Ryu. Dave Krynzel, 0-for-12 in the series entering the game, ripped a first-inning single to right, and J.J. Hardy plated him with a double off the leftfield wall for a 1-0 Stars lead.

In the second, Hundley singled in his first professional plate appearance. Before Milwaukee signed him in May, Hundley spent five seasons in the Anaheim Angels organization, where the designated hitter was always in effect. Alejandro Machado followed with a single to right and Krynzel executed a sacrifice bunt. Ryu uncorked a wild pitch, and Hundley scored from third to put Huntsville up, 2-0.

Ryu pitched himself into a fourth-inning jam, walking leadoff hitter Daryl Clark and plunking Chris Barnwell on the hip. After Kade Johnson laced a run-scoring single to left, Hundley laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt. Machado lashed a Ryu breaking ball into the right-field corner for a two-run double and a 5-0 Stars advantage. Ryu (1-3) left after four innings and suffered his third loss, giving up five runs on six hits and three walks while fanning two.

Huntsville returns home to start a four-game series with Chattanooga on Tuesday night. Stars lefty Jeff Housman (3-0, 1.46) seeks his fourth win in just five starts since a promotion from low-A Beloit. Game time is 7:05 p.m. at Joe Davis Stadium on Auburn Football Giveaway Night sponsored by Madison RV Center.

Stars Notebook: The news on Mike Jones' prized right elbow is good. After Jones flew to Milwaukee for an MRI on Friday, the final results came back today. Jones was diagnosed with an elbow sprain. His rehabilitation program will begin within a week.
