Mobile, Ala.- Joe Gerber capped a 4-for-4 night with a seventh inning grand slam as Mobile (24-24, 53-63) blanked Tennessee (28-19, 63-54) 9-0 Saturday night at Hank Aaron Stadium.
Gerber put the game away with his first home run against reliever Kevin Sprague, but the BayBears had already built a 5-0 lead after three innings. Jon Knott doubled to score Rico Washington with two out in the first inning against Pat Collins (0-1). Knott scored on a single by Bobby Scales.
Knott was at it again in the third, with a two run home run. Scales was walked and scored on a Gerber single. The BayBears scored 7 of their 9 runs with two out, while Tennessee left 11 men on base. Smokies hitters went 0-for-10 with runners in scoring position.
Cory Stewart (12-6) scattered four hits over six shutout innings to earn the win.
Tennessee made a roster move following the game, activating LHP Chris Narveson from the disabled list as the Southern League roster limit expands to 24. Narveson (3-0, 2.08) will start Sunday night for the Smokies against Chris Oxspring (8-3, 3.01).
