Mobile BayBears News Release

Mobile, Ala. – Joe Gerber was promoted to the Mobile BayBears just five days ago from Lake Elsinore, he made his presence felt Saturday night. The first baseman went 4-for-4, including a grand slam, with five RBIs as Mobile trounced the Tennessee Smokies 9-0, in front of 4,589 fans at Hank Aaron Stadium.

Jon Knott also played a big role in the BayBears victory Saturday night. The Mobile slugger set the single-season homerun record for the BayBears as he hit his 23rd tater of the year, a two-run shot in the bottom of the third.

The BayBears scored two runs in the first inning as Rico Washington and Knott hit back-to-back doubles, followed by an RBI single by Bobby Scales.

Gerber picked up his first RBI of the night as he singled in Scales who had walked following Knott's homerun in the third.

Gerber and the BayBears put the game away in the seventh. Washington singled and Knott and Humberto Quintero drew walks to load the bases. Gerber then left the yard in a big way, hitting his homerun nearly over the clubhouse over the right field wall.

Cory Stewart (12-6) earned the win as he threw six shutout innings, giving up only four hits while striking out six.

The BayBears and Smokies will play game three of their series Sunday night at 7:05. Chris Oxspring (8-3) will get the start on the hill for Mobile.
