Battery Travel to Indy for Midweek Match

July 11, 2023 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Charleston Battery News Release

CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Charleston Battery kick off their July schedule with the first of two road matches this week, against Indy Eleven on Wed., July 12. Kickoff at IUPUI Michael A. Carroll Stadium is set for 7 p.m. ET.

Charleston square off against Indy looking to avenge their earlier defeat back in June at Patriots Point. The state capital club leads the series with a 4W-2L-1D record over Charleston, a mark the Battery will aim to tilt back toward even terms.

The Battery (9W-5L-4D, 31 pts) enter Wednesday's contest following a bye week this past weekend, a welcome break ahead of another summer road stand. Charleston defeated Loudoun United FC, 3-0, in their last match on June 30. Augi Williams and Nick Markanich (two) both found the back of the net.

Indy (5W-7L-5D, 20 pts) stay at home following a 0-1 defeat to FC Tulsa on Saturday. An early strike from Tulsa's Moses Dyer proved to be enough to lift the visitors past Indy. The Eleven occupy the second-last playoffs spot with a one-point advantage over Tulsa and Loudoun.

Arturo Rodriguez is the player to watch for Charleston. The Mexican midfielder tallied two assists against Loudoun en route to his third Team of the Week selection this season and leads the team in chances created (22).

Aodhan Quinn is one to keep an eye on for the hosts. Quinn leads Indy with five goals thus far and tallied two from the penalty spot in the match against the Battery back in June.

So far this year, Indy lead the league in penalties won (five).

The Battery received a boost on offense and defense ahead of this match as Leland Archer and Fidel Barajas returned from international duty with Trinidad & Tobago and Mexico, respectively.

AJ Cochran will have a chance to return to his old stomping grounds for the first time since joining the Battery and after spending the previous two seasons with Indy.

Deklan Wynne is nearing 100 career matches played in the USL Championship regular season, he currently has 97 to his name.

FROM THE TRAINING GROUND

Head Coach Ben Pirmann and midfielder Robbie Crawford discussed the upcoming match against Indy with the media prior to traveling to Indiana, with key quotes to follow.

Coach Pirmann on passing the halfway point of the 2023 season...

We're 18 games in of the 34, sitting in a good spot in the table but still a long way to get where we want to be. Working to stop conceding goals, keep moving the ball and breaking lines. We've been good in the attack, but we want to continue to flourish. We're getting a little healthier and getting guys back from international duty. So it's a long season, up and down, we just want to continue to be as consistent as possible.

Coach Pirmann on facing Indy again for the reverse fixture...

In the last game we played them, we got a red card nine seconds in and the whole match was out. We actually played a pretty good solid 75 minutes but got tired [with 10 men] and lost at the end. We know that Indy are good, they're trending upward. They keep the ball very well, they break lines and they don't concede a whole lot. It's going to be a 50-50 game.

Crawford on the bye week and training for the upcoming games...

I think the few days off are important for us, to rest and recharge. Since we came back it's just getting the guys back together, a couple were with their national teams, so it's good to have everyone back together. We're getting back on track, we're getting our fitness back, with touches on the ball. Everyone is refreshed and good to go.

Crawford on going into this Wednesday's match...

I think we know that game was a bit of a freak result, in terms of what happened in the first minute, and these things happened. For 70 minutes that game, we held our own and did well, even with a man down. So, I think just building on that, looking at what did well in that game, we kept the ball well, we were compact and made it difficult for them to create much. On the road, we need to be compact and do what we do.
