Homeless World Cup Advances to Second Round - 5 More Days of Matches

July 11, 2023 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Sacramento Republic FC News Release

It's been a stellar three days of football in Sacramento since the Homeless World Cup kicked off Saturday. Sacramento State has been the host to nearly 200 matches through the tournament's opening three days, with 42 squads taking the pitch from Hornet Field for a chance at hardware. If you haven't been out to a match, there are five more days of action, with games beginning at 5:00 pm on Tuesday - Friday, and at 9:00 am on Saturday. Reserve your tickets online.

The annual tournament now moves on to the next round, with every squad at the tournament getting a chance at hardware. The Homeless World Cup, Nelsen Way Award, Lassen Peak Award, and Shasta Award are all in play from now through the end of the week.

Mexico, Portugal, Chile, and Brazil all claimed the top spot in their group in the men's competition, as each side went undefeated through the group stage. Following each group winner in second place was the United States, Northern Ireland, Lithuania and Hungary. Chile and Mexico led the charge on the Women's side, each claiming five wins and 15 points. On Monday, Republic FC defenders Lee Desmond and Aldair Sanchez presented the FIFPro Fair Play award to Denmark's squad - awarding the teams and players showing incredible sportsmanship and fair play each day of the tournament.

From today through the weekend, Stage 2 of the tournament takes place to determine who lifts a trophy. On the men's side, the top four squads in each group - each of the aformentioned nations plus Poland, Ukraine, Wales, Sweden, Bulgaria, Indonesia, Costa Rica, and Finland - will be placed into groups of four to earn a spot in the final eight. On the women's side, the top four go directly to the semifinals - Chile, Mexico, Ireland, and Romania.

The teams who didn't finish atop their groups still have a shot at hardware. The men's competition awards three trophies, and the women's three, with the four squads that miss the final eight moving on to play for the Nelsen Way Award. The Lassen Peak and Shasta Awards will award the efforts of the remaining 12 teams.

The champions from the tournament will lift the 18th Homeless World Cup on Saturday afternoon. After each winner is crowned, they will be acknowledged at Republic FC's match at Heart Health Park later that evening as the Indomitable Club takes on Memphis 901 FC. Kickoff is set for 8:00 p.m. at Heart Health Park.
