Battered & Bruised 'Caps Fall on Road

West Michigan Whitecaps News Release
The West Michigan Whitecaps winning streak came to an end on Wednesday in Illinois. But right now there's more concern about the health of the team than a winning streak. The Whitecaps were shutout by the Kane County Cougars, 4-0, snapping their four game winning streak. The Whitecaps are still a fine 4-2 halfway through their 12-game road trip, their longest of the season.
Before the game, outfielder Wilton Reynolds was placed on the disabled list. The leading hitter on the team at .331, Reynolds suffered a leg injury in Cedar Rapids on Monday. In the third inning, first round draft pick Scott Moore was forced to leave the game with an apparent hand injury. Then in the fifth inning, 'Caps starting pitcher Matt Pender was seriously injured after being struck by a ball in the head and neck area. Pender, who lay motionless on the field as the game was halted for nearly 30 minutes, was taken to an area hospital.
In the game, the 'Caps were handcuffed on just four singles by Kane County starter Shane Komine who raised his record to 6-0 on the season and matched the 'Caps Jon Connolly. Connolly had beaten the Cougars on Tuesday night and improved his personal record to 6-0.
The 'Caps and Cougars will meet again on Thursday night in game three of the series at 7:00 Michigan time. Matt Parris is scheduled to start for West Michigan in place of fire-balling right-hander Joel Zumaya. Zumaya, who leads all of the minors in strikeouts with 59, was (you guessed it) injured in his last start in Cedar Rapids.
