
Komine leads the Cougars past the Caps, 4-0

Geneva, IL - Shane Komine (6-0) waited for a good day to pitch his 1st professional complete game shutout. His dominant four-hitter, helped the Cougars (27-13) snap a two-game losing streak, and take game two of the series from the West Michigan Whitecaps (21-19), 4-0. Komine scattered four hits, walked one, and fanned seven. The Whitecaps had only one runner in scoring position, Mike Rabelo, who reached third base with two outs in the third inning. The Cougars received their 8th team shutout on the season, and lowered their team ERA to 2.89 (2nd in the league).
Matt Pender (1-3), who left the game in the fifth inning, suffered the loss for the Whitecaps. The inning featured a 28-minute delay, when Pender was struck on the jaw from Nick Rogers' infield single. The hit scored the second run for the Cougars, and they added a run two batters later on a Francis Gomez RBI double.
The Cougars first run happened when Nelson Cruz led off the inning with a double. The next batter, Brian Stavisky dropped a sacrifice bunt, turning into a throwing error by the pitcher, allowing Cruz to score from second base.
John Baker, who started the day 10th in the Midwest League in average (.313), blasted his third home run with one out in the sixth inning, giving the Cougars their final run. Baker has two of his three home runs against left-handers, and earned his 22nd RBI (Team Leader).
The win for the Cougars ended a two-game losing streak, and a two-game losing streak at Elfstrom Stadium. Kane County improves to 15-6 at home, and 9-9 against the Eastern Division.
Komine joins Drew Dickinson and Joe Blanton in pitching complete game shutouts.
Cougars and the Whitecaps will meet in game three of their series tomorrow night at Elfstrom Stadium - game time is 6:00 PM. Bill Murphy LHP (2-3, 3.05) makes his 8th start of the season for Kane County; Matt Parris RHP (1-2, 2.48) will get the starting nod for West Michigan.
