Indianapolis Indians News Release
LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- The Louisville Bats held the Tribe to just four hits as starter Sam LeCure threw seven scoreless frames and the bullpen tossed two shut out innings, while their offense plated seven runs in the sixth to defeat the Indianapolis Indians 7-0 on Sunday night at Louisville slugger field.
With the loss the Indians fall to 69-73 overall and 33-37 on the road, while the Bats improve to 84-57 overall and 45-26 at home with the win. The victory for Louisville gives them the 1-0 series lead and pushes their season advantage to 16-6 with just one game remaining between the two clubs.
LeCure (7.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 7 SO) struck out seven and gave up just two hits in his seven scoreless innings to move to 10-8 on the season. The right hander is also now 2-0 in his three starts against Indianapolis having allowed only five earned runs in 17.1 total innings for a 2.65 ERA versus the Tribe.
Louisville kept up the shutout upon LeCure's exit when right handers Joe Krebs (1.0 IP, 1 SO) and Enerio Del Rosario (1.0 IP, 2 H) replaced him with two scoreless frames out of the bullpen. With the stellar performances by Krebs and Del Rosario the Bats continued their recent bullpen dominance as their relief corps has given up just one earned run over 15 innings in their past four games against Indianapolis.
Offensively the Bats did all their damage in a single inning as they posted seven runs in the bottom of the sixth. The seven-run frame was the second most the Indians have allowed in a single inning this season as they gave up eight runs in the seventh inning against Louisville on July 6, a game in which LeCure also started.
C Ryan Hanigan led off the frame with a walk and was followed aboard by 1B Wes Bankston who singled to right field. Then with two outs and two on the next seven Louisville hitters each reached base as they batted around the order.
Hanigan scored on an RBI single by SS Chris Valiaka who was followed on base by LF Lew Ford who received a base on balls. Following the walk RF Michael Griffin brought both Bankston and Valaika plateward with a two-run single to right field.
LeCure then helped his own cause with a two-run base knock to center field that scored both Ford and Griffin. CF Chris Heisey followed the single with a walk and came home along with LeCure when Hanigan slapped a two-run double to right field in his second at-bat of the inning.
RF Jay Bruce followed the double with a walk, but the rally was finally ended when Bankston struck out swinging. Overall Louisville collected five hits and three walks in the frame to put together the only runs of the contest.
Tribe starter Yoslan Herrera (5.2 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 2 SO) gave up three runs during the Bats' rally, while RHP Jeff Sues (0.0 IP, 3 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 2 BB) replaced him and allowed the other four scores in the frame. RHP Jorge Julio (0.1 IP, 1 BB, 1 SO) eventually put a stop to the big-inning with the final strike out before giving way to RHP Jeff Karstens (2.0 IP, 3 SO) who was excellent with three strikeouts in two perfect innings of relief.
Herrera was pinned with his first loss for the Tribe season after he struck out two and allowed three runs on four hits in 5.2 innings of work. The starter also collected one of the Tribe's four base knocks with a single to right field in the third inning.
RF Tagg Bozied (2-for-4) was the only Tribe hitter to record multiple hits with two singles on the night. Louisville however received multi-hit efforts from Bankston (2-for-4, 1 R, 1 3B) and Valaika (2-for-4, 1 R, 1 RBI), while Hanigan (1-for-3, 1 R, 1 2B, 2 RBI, 1 BB), Griffin (1-for-4, 1 R, 2 RBI, 1 SB) and LeCure (1-for-2, 1 R, 2 RBI, 1 BB) each tallied multiple RBI.
Indianapolis wraps up their 2009 season against Louisville on Monday with a 1:15 p.m. contest. Indians RHP Eric Hacker is scheduled to take the mound in the season finale., while LHP Tom Cochran is expected to get the nod for the Bats.
The contest will be carried by WXLW-950 AM and www.IndyIndians.com with Howard Kellman and Scott McCauley. The pre-game show begins at 12:55 p.m.
