Louisville Bats News Release
Louisville, KY - The Louisville Bats entered the final two games of the season looking to get ready for the playoffs. If tonight was any indication, they are ready. The Bats rode a seven-run sixth inning to down the Indianapolis Indians 7-0 tonight in front of 10,394 fans at Louisville Slugger Field. Sam LeCure paced Louisville on the mound and helped his own cause at the plate going 1-for-3 with a two-out, two-run single in the sixth inning.
After going winless for nearly a month, LeCure (10-8, 4.46) made his final regular season start and dominated the Indians retiring twelve consecutive batters at one point. He shut out the Indians over seven innings, allowing only two hits and striking out seven. The win broke a string of five starts without being able to pick up his tenth victory of the season.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Bats posed the first threat of the game. Wes Bankston hit a one out triple to right, becoming the first base-runner of the game to reach past first base. Todd Frazier then rolled a ball up the third base line and a nice play by Indianapolis' Brian Bixler cut down Bankston trying to score. Frazier was able to move to second on a wild pitch but Chris Valaika grounded out, ending the threat.
Louisville put seven runs on the scoreboard in the home half of the sixth inning. With runners at first and second and two outs, the Bats had six hitters in a row reach base. Valaika started the two out rally with a RBI-single. Lew Ford drew a walk and then Michael Griffin, LeCure, and Ryan Hanigan had two-run hits giving the Bats a 7-0 lead after six.
Yoslan Herrera (1-1, 2.30) took the loss for the Indians despite throwing well. He lasted five and two-thirds innings giving up three runs, on four hits, walked two, and struck out two. Two of the three runs he allowed scored following his exit from the game as the Indian bullpen allowed four runs in a third of an inning.
The Indians and the Bats will wrap up the 2009 regular season tomorrow afternoon at 1:15 p.m. at Louisville Slugger Field. On the mound for Louisville will be Left-hander Tom Cochran (1-0, 4.15) and Right-hander Eric Hacker (5-6, 4.56) will get the start for Indianapolis.
