Louisville Bats News Release
Louisville, KY - The Louisville Bats split a double-header tonight against the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees in front of a crowd of 9,706. The Bats were shutout in game one 4-0 thanks to a superb pitching performance from Yankee starter Dan Giese (3-2 0.96). They came back with a 4-1 victory in game two courtesy of a strong start from Justin Mallett and more offensive production from Jay Bruce.
The Yankees got on the board early in game one against Bats starter Homer Bailey (4-4 3.88). Bailey walked three batters in the first inning and issued a career high six walks in the game. Yankees cleanup batter Juan Miranda would make Bailey pay as he ripped a two-out, two-run homer into the right field seats after a Jason Lane walk.
The Yankees played add-on in the top of the third when left fielder Justin Christian ripped an RBI single to right field, scoring catcher Chris Stewart, putting the SWB Yankees up 3-0. Christian then stole second and an errant throw from Bats catcher Ryan Hanigan allowed Brett Gardner to score from third making the score 4-0, which ended up being the final. After another walk, Bailey struck out the last two Yankee hitters to avoid further damage. Bailey who was hit with the loss went five innings, giving up four hits, and four earned runs. He struck out four to go along with his six walks.
Yankee starter Dan Giese was tough on Bats hitters all game. The Bats could only muster three hits, two by Hanigan who had a pair of singles. The Bats only had one runner reach third during the game. Giese earned his third win of the year, pitching a complete game shut out. Along with the three hits he gave up, Giese issued only one walk and struck out four. In the loss, Bats designated hitter Andy Phillips saw his 17-game hitting streak snapped. It was the longest streak in the International League this year.
Game two was a different story for the Bats, as they defeated the Yankees 4-2. Their victory over the SWB was their sixth of the season, which is the most victories against SWB in a single season in franchise history. The Bats jumped on the board early in the bottom of the first, as shortstop Adam Rosales laced a one-out double to right field. The next batter, left fielder Jay Bruce, homered into the left-field seats making the score 2-0. It was Bruce's team leading ninth home run of the year.
In the bottom of the third the Bats tacked on two more runs. They loaded the bases with one out when Jolbert Cabrera hit a fly ball that fell in-between Yankee second baseman Bernie Castro and right fielder Jason Lane. Rosales scored on the play making it a 3-0 game. Kevin Barker then singled to right field scoring Bruce, giving the Bats their final run total for the game at four.
Bats starter Justin Mallett made his first start of the year for the Bats and it was a good one. Mallett shut Yankee hitters down pitching four scoreless innings. He gave up just three hits, struck out four, and did not walk a batter.
The Yankees were able to score two on the Bats' bullpen and threatened to tie the game in the top of the seventh. But, Danny Herrera came in to record the last out and pick up his second save of the season.
Gary Majewski (2-1, 4.71) picked up the win for the Bats, pitching one inning, allowing one hit, one earned run and walking two.
Kei Igawa (3-4 3.74) took the loss for the Yankees, pitching a complete game, going six innings, and giving up five hits. He gave up four runs, two of them earned, struck out five, and walked one.
The Bats will open a two-game series against the Indianapolis Indians at Louisville Slugger Field on Saturday. First pitch will be at 6:15 with Bats RHP Tom Shearn (6-1 3.95) taking the mound against Indians starter RHP Luis Munoz (2-1 4.15)
