Arkansas Travelers News Release
Dickey-Stephens Park, North Little Rock, Arkansas - The Arkansas Travelers (2-5, 38-39) were kept off balance all night by Midland RockHounds' (2-5, 36-41) starter Brett Anderson (1-0). Anderson was making his Double-A debut and was very sharp, striking out 12 batters in six innings pitched en route to winning 5-3. Travs' starter Bobby Mosebach (6-6) was touched for five runs and was saddled with the loss. Mosebach was again troubled in the fourth inning, allowing two runs in the inning. In Mosebach's last start, he allowed four earned runs, all in the fourth inning. Mosebach has a .320 batting average against him in the fourth inning, his highest of any inning.
Mosebach allowed consecutive singles to start the fourth inning, which both came around to score on Anthony Recker's two-RBI double.
The Travs tied the game with solo homers by Brian Stavisky and Corey Smith in the fourth and fifth innings respectively. Stavisky's long ball broke a streak of seven consecutive strikeouts by Anderson. A groundout for the first out in the fifth inning was the first ball put in play that wasn't a hit. Anderson struck out 10 of the first 14 batters he faced.
Mosebach got into trouble again in the sixth inning by loading the bases with no outs on two singles and a walk. After striking out Recker, Mosebach walked Brian Snyder on a 3-2 count to force in a run. The third and final run came in to score on a fielder's-choice ground out.
Arkansas closed to within two runs in the ninth inning on an RBI single off the bat of Ben Johnson, scoring Adam Greenberg. Johnson's 63 RBI of the year leaves him still in second place in the Texas League RBI category behind Midland's Jesus Guzman who is currently playing in Triple-A. Johnson finished the game 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.
Two Travs' players were gunned down on the bases by Recker, the RockHounds' catcher. Johnson and Stavisky were both caught trying to steal third base.
The Travelers stranded just two base runners on the night, marking just the third time all season they have stranded less than three.
The Travs were playing short handed due to a plethora of roster moves by the organization and flight problems in Houston. Chris Pettit, Adam Morrissey and Tim Duff were scheduled to arrive today and be in the starting lineup for tonight's game, but due to airline problems, they did not arrive until after the game was over. The Travs were forced to play the game with only nine position players, eight fielders and one designated hitter.
Boxscore
Time of game was 2:53 and paid attendance was 5,587.
The Travs will take on the RockHounds in game two of the series on Friday night. Arkansas will send RHP Dan Denham (6-5, 3.15 ERA) to face Midland RHP Trevor Cahill (1-0, 1.50 ERA). Game time is set for 7:10 p.m. with the gates opening at 6:10.
