Louisville Bats News Release

Louisville, KY - Ryan Hanigan and Drew Anderson each provided the offensive spark needed to help the Louisville Bats win their sixth straight game Wednesday night, an 8-4 victory over the Toledo Mud Hens at Louisville Slugger Field. The win, which was the Bats 21st in their last 27 games, put Louisville a season-high eight games ahead of second-place Toledo in the International League West Division standings.

Hanigan, who was one of two Louisville players to make the 2008 All-Star game, went 5-for-5 with two RBIs on the night, with all five of his hits being singles. It was the first career five-hit game for the Washington, D.C. native, and the second time this season a member of the Bats has accomplished the feat, as Luis Bolivar also smacked five singles on June 12th against Pawtucket. Hanigan, who currently leads all active Louisville players in batting average, is now 10-for-17 in the month of August.

The game had remained nip and tuck until Anderson stepped to the plate in the eighth inning, when he smashed a three-run blast to right center, his seventh of the season, to give Louisville an 8-4 lead. Anderson now has eight RBIs in the three games thus far in the series.

For the first time in five contests, the Bats faced a deficit after Toledo took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the third. The lead only lasted a half an inning, however, as the Bats tied it up thanks to Chris Dickerson singling up the middle to score Paul Janish, who had doubled to lead off the inning.

After taking the lead in the fourth inning on a Rob Mackowiak RBI single, Louisville plated two runs in the fifth frame to give them a 4-1 lead. Anderson drove in the first run of the inning with a sacrifice fly, followed by Hanigan singling up the middle to score Danny Richar.

Two runs by the Mud Hens in the top of the sixth inning tightened the contest to 4-3, as Bats starter Justin Mallett (5-2, 4.80) was chased with two runners on base after 5.1 innings of work. He gave up four hits and walked three, while striking out five. All three runs Mallett surrendered were earned.

Thanks to the 3.2 solid innings of work from the bullpen, Mallett earned the win. Matt Belisle worked the last part of the eighth and the ninth to earn his fourth save of the season. Carlos Fisher and Daniel Ray Herrera earned holds coming out of the bullpen.

Mud Hens starter Virgil Vasquez (7-12, 5.14) was dealt the loss after giving up four earned runs in six innings. He struck out two and walked two, while giving up nine hits.

The Bats will go for a four game sweep over the Mud Hens on Thursday evening with a 7:05PM first pitch at Louisville Slugger Field. RHP Ramon Ramirez (2-4, 3.54), who didn't give up any earned runs in seven innings during his last start, will be on the mound for Louisville. Toledo will counter with RHP Anastacio Martinez (2-4, 5.70).
