Calgary Vipers News Release

The Calgary Vipers scored ten runs in the middle three innings to defeat the Victoria Seals 11-7 at Foothills Stadium in Calgary, Alberta. After the Seals took the lead in both the fourth and fifth innings the Vipers were able to respond twice and go ahead for good with five tallies in the home half of the fifth. With the victory the Snakes improve to 16-10 and hold onto their one game lead in the Golden Baseball League's North Division.

Calgary's bullpen of Dallas Mahan, Mac Suzuki, and Jon Huizinga was solid throwing a combined four scoreless innings. Mahan went an inning and a third striking out four, Suzuki a inning and two-thirds with two punch outs, and Huizinga pitched the ninth inning with strikeout as well. Three great defensive plays were made by the Vipers in the last three innings as Mark Okano leaped at the wall for a catch, Rick Guarno made a great snag and block of home plate to tag out a runner, and Fehlandt Lentini made a terrific sliding catch to assist the bullpen. Starter Evan Greusel (4-1) recorded the victory throwing the first five innings and giving up four earned runs without giving up a walk. Eduardo Baeza (1-5) was saddled with the loss after giving up nine runs in four and a third innings.

Jorge Mejia led Calgary at the plate going four-for-four with three runs scored and a walk while Colin Moro also had a good night at the plate going three-for-four with three runs batted in and two scored.

Calgary opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning as Lentini singled, stole second base, moved to third on a Nelson Castro groundout, and scored on a Jorge Mejia run batted in single for a 1-0 lead.

Victoria got onto the scoreboard in the fourth frame as Sergio Pedroza hit a solo home run to tie the game. With two outs Chris Van Rossum reached on a fielding error by first baseman Moro, and both Brian Rios and Brett Flowers collected RBI doubles for a 3-1 advantage.

The Vipers answered right back in the bottom of the inning as Castro and Mejia singled, moved into scoring position on a Joe Jiannetti fly ball, and scored on a Colin Moro two-run double to tie the game. After a Drew Miller ground ball advanced Moro to third base he scored on a wild pitch to give his team the lead back at 4-3.

The Seals responded in the next half inning as Bret Levier doubled, Wilver Perez singled to put runners at the corners, Perez then stole second base and when the throw got away Levier scored to tie the game. After a stolen base Perez scored on a Jamar Hill RBI base hit, and Van Rossum drove in a third run with a triple for a 6-4 advantage.

Right back came Calgary in the bottom of the fifth as Dillon O'Krane and Lentini singled, both advanced on a wild pitch, and both scored when Castro reached on a fielding error by first baseman Flowers. Mejia followed with a single, both Moro and Miller plated runs with base knocks, and Guarno hit a sacrifice fly for the fifth run of the inning and a 9-6 lead.

Victoria got a run back in the sixth frame as Flowers singled, Levier was hit by a pitch, and Perez cashed one with a base hit for the 9-7 score.

In the bottom half of the inning Mejia singled and Joe Jiannetti hit a two run blast over the left field wall for his first home run as a Snake and a 11-7 advantage.

This three-game-set concludes with a rubber-match on Thursday June 25th at 7:05 PM MDT with Erik Dessau (2-0) on the mound against Travis Wade (1-4). Dessau has recorded back-to-back no-decisions after winning his first two starts of the season while Wade is fresh off his first victory of the year his last time out.
