Salem-Keizer Volcanoes News Release

The Volcanoes scored seven runs in the eighth inning Friday night as Salem-Keizer pounded the Eugene Emeralds 9-2 at PK Park.

Salem-Keizer was clinging to a 2-1 advantage before the bats erupted in the seventh, tying a season-high with seven runs scored in the frame. Eight different batters reached in the inning and seven of the eight scored a run. In total, the half inning lasted 41 minutes and featured three pitchers.

The contest began in entirely different fashion as both starters had a pitcher's duel going early. The two allowed a combined four hits through the contest's first four innings and allowed a batter to reach third just once.

Volcanoes starter Andrew Suarez blinked first, surrendering the game's first run in the second inning. Ian Rice singled to lead off the frame and later scored when Alex Bautista slapped a two-out single into right, pushing Eugene out in front. Suarez settled down over his final two innings of work, holding the Emeralds hitless throughout the remainder of his outing.

Emeralds starter Jose Paulino was nearly untouchable through his first five innings, allowing just two hits, but Salem-Keizer finally broke through in the sixth. Miguel Gomez doubled with one out in the inning before Jose Vizcaino Jr. belted a two-run home run to thrust Salem-Keizer ahead, 2-1. It was Vizcaino Jr.'s fifth homer of the season and his first since July 21.

Eugene threatened in the bottom of the frame, loading the bases with two outs, but reliever David Owen struck out Alex Bautista to escape the inning with the lead intact.

Salem-Keizer pulled away in the eighth, sending 13 men to the plate and scoring seven runs. Ronnie Jebavy reached on a hit by pitch to begin the inning before stealing his way around the bases and scoring on a wild pitch. A trio of Eugene relievers then allowed 10 of the next 11 men to reach, tacking on six more runs. It was the most Salem-Keizer had scored in an inning since hanging seven runs on Everett on July 31.

Player of the Game: John Riley went 3-for-4 on the night with two doubles, two RBIs, a walk, a stolen base and a run scored.
