Springfield Cardinals News Release
The Springfield Cardinals and Bass Pro Shops are excited to announce the participants for the Bass Pro Shops Home Run Derby, to take place prior to the 2008 Texas League All-Star Game presented by Great Southern. Tickets are still available by calling (417) 863-2143 or online at www.springfieldcardinals.com. A ticket on the grass berm is an awesome spot to catch a home run ball tomorrow night! Gates open at 5:10pm and the Bass Pro Shops Home Run Derby will kick off at 5:30pm.
Springfield's Allen Craig, one of four North Division Sluggers, will be the lone Cardinal in the field of eight. Craig, who has been Springfield's top home run hitter and RBI producer for much of the year, enters the All-Star Break with 11 homers.
Also from the North Division is Ben Johnson from the Arkansas Travelers. Johnson, a switch-hitter, is tied for the Texas League lead with 17 round-trippers.
Northwest Arkansas will be represented by Kila Kaaihue, who like Johnson, is tied for the league-lead with 17 home runs.
Tony Blanco of Tulsa will be the Drillers' representative. Blanco, who joined the Drillers in late-April, already has 12 home runs in 48 games.
South Division sluggers include Corpus Christi's Chris Johnson, who has seven dingers thus far.
With the recent promotion of co-home run leader Max Ramirez to the Texas Rangers, the Frisco RoughRiders will be represented by Ben Harrison, who has 13 homers so far this season.
Midland's Tommy Everidge, who had a three-homer game earlier this year, will represent the RockHounds. Everidge has a total of 14 bombs this year.
The final slugger will be San Antonio's Kyle Blanks. This slugger has just six home runs thus far in 2008, but the 6'6'' 270-pound Blanks is capable of putting on quite a show in batting practice.
The rules for the 2008 Bass Pro Shops Home Run Derby are below.
