Mississauga St. Michael's Majors News Release
The only thing that separated the Mississauga St. Michael's Majors and the Barrie Colts on Friday night was one fluky goal.
But that was all the Colts needed as Ivan Telegin's backhand shot from behind the net hit Brandon Maxwell in the back and fluttered into the net at 14:13 of the first period for the game's only goal in a 1-0 Barrie win.
Mathias Niederberger made 23 saves for the shutout as the Colts out-shot the Majors 35-23 in a tightly played game that featured good goaltending but few scoring chances for either side.
"We had eight power plays but we didn't score a goal that's the game right there," General Manager/Coach James Boyd said. "You have to score when you get that many chances.
"I thought we did a good job moving the puck but didn't get to the net often enough and create some chances. That said, we played hard against a good team and Max (Brandon Maxwell) was outstanding.
"It was a tight game but they are all tight in this league. It's going to be playoff hockey just to get to the playoffs this year, so we just have to get used to that."
It certainly was a costly loss for the Majors in the standings as well. Mississauga (22-21-1-5) slipped into seventh place in the East with 50 points, two points behind the Peterborough Petes who beat the Kingston Frontenacs 4-2. Oshawa and Belleville are now tied for eighth with 49 points, as Oshawa lost at Ottawa but Belleville upset the Rangers in Kitchener.
Barrie (27-19-2-1) solidified its hold on fourth place in the East with the victory, their third straight.
The Majors failed to score on eight power play opportunities, while the Colts were 0-for-3 with the extra man.
Mississauga heads out on a two-game road trip Saturday when they face the Knights in London at 7 p.m., and then the Windsor Spitfires Sunday ay 2 p.m. on Super Bowl Sunday in Windsor. Tickets are available at the Hershey Centre box office or online at www.ticketmaster.ca.
