Birmingham Barons News Release
The Barons can add another accomplishment to their spectacular 2009 season: Winner of the Double A World Series Presented by WhatIfSports.Com. The team came back from a three games to one deficit, taking game seven by a score of 9-0.
Daniel Hudson didn't allow a hit until there was one out in the ninth inning. By that point, the Barons were ahead 9-0 and well on their way toward winning their computer simulated series with the Akron Aeros.
Hudson (1-0, 0.00) dominated in much the same fashion he has throughout the 2009 season. The stud right-hander retired 21 batters in a row before issuing the one-out single to John Drennen in the ninth inning. Carlos Santana - who reached on a Gordon Beckham throwing error - was the only other Akron Aero to reach base safely as Hudson walked no batters and struck out six.
Stefan Gartrell provided the Barons a huge lift offensively, hitting two home runs and driving in five runs in the decisive game seven. The power-hitting outfielder smacked a solo home run down the right field line in the second inning. He added a grand slam in the fifth inning.
Beckham added some pop of his own, crushing a three-run blast in the third inning to give the Barons a 4-0 lead. The 2008 first-round pick added an RBI double in the fifth inning.
Gordon Beckham took home the MVP honors after hitting .406 with two home runs and a series high 11 RBI during the seven game series. He hit four doubles as well.
