Birmingham Barons News Release

BIRMINGHAM, AL – The Barons split a doubleheader with the West Tennessee Diamond Jaxx by the scores of 4-2 and 1-7 on Monday afternoon in front of 2,224 fans at the Hoover Met. By winning game one, the Barons set a new record for most consecutive home wins. The victory was their tenth straight at the Met and eclipsed the previous high of nine straight set back in 1993.

The opening game saw Tetsu Yofu (2-1) make his first American start since coming to the States late last year. Yofu picked up the win after firing five innings and giving up two runs on three hits and striking out seven. The one bad pitch he made hurt him as Brandon Sing hammered the pitch deep to left for a two-run homer in the fifth.

The offense would pick him up in the bottom half of the inning though as they strung together three straight two-out, RBI hits off of D-Jaxx starter Sergio Mitre (2-3). Darron Ingram and Scott Bikowski each knocked in a run with singles to tie the game at two and Carlos Maldonado doubled home a pair as the Barons took the 4-2 lead.

Matt Smith threw a scoreless inning in relief of Yofu before giving way to Royce Ring who struck out all three batters he faced in the seventh to pick up his eighth save of the season.

Game two saw the Diamond Jaxx snap the Barons seven-game winning streak as West Tenn knocked out 13 hits and scored seven runs. Jason Dubois hit a two-run homer in the first off Barons starter Brian West (2-3) and Sing smashed his second homer of the day with a three-run shot in the sixth.

Birmingham managed just six hits on the day, including a RBI double by Gabe Alvarez, as West Tenn starter Mike Nannini (3-1) picked up the win.

The Barons will wrap up the series tomorrow night at 7:00 PM as LHP Neal Cotts (5-1, 1.19) faces West Tennessee's RHP Angel Guzman (2-2, 4.98).
