April 7, 2018 - Southern League (SL1)
Birmingham Barons News Release
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - In a well-pitched contest, the Birmingham Barons (1-1) suffered their first loss of the 2018 season, 2-0 to the Chattanooga Lookouts on Saturday night at AT&T Field. The Lookouts got 5.1 hitless innings from starter Stephen Gonsalves (W, 1-0) before three relievers combined to finish the shutout.
Turning Point: Mounting their first sustained attack of the night, the Barons got the tying runs to second and third base with one out in the top of the eighth. However, Lookouts reliever Zack Jones struck out Tito Polo and induced a ground out from Danny Mendick to preserve the shutout and end the inning.
Facts And Figures: In his first start of the season, Jordan Stephens (L, 0-1) finished with a final line of one earned run against on two hits in 6.0 innings with two walks and seven strikeouts. Last year, Stephens only held opposing hitters to two or fewer hits in a start one time.
By The Numbers: With his seventh inning single on Saturday, designated hitter Seby Zavala is now the only Baron to record a hit in each of the first two games of the season. In his first career action at the Double-A level, Zavala has also recorded three walks over his first two games.
Up Next: The Barons will play their first doubleheader of the season on Sunday afternoon with first pitch set for 1:15 p.m. CST. Southpaws Jordan Guerrero and Ian Clarkin are scheduled to start the two games for Birmingham. Curt Bloom will have the call on 960 WERC News Radio and the iHeart Radio app.
