Barons Rack Up 16 Hits In 8-3 Win Over Suns

Birmingham, AL - The Birmingham Barons tied a season-high with 16 hits in winning their second-straight game against the Jacksonville Suns 8-3 in front of 3,615 fans at Regions Park.

The Barons took a 1-0 lead in the second against Suns starter Graham Taylor (2-2, 5.23) as Corey Smith led off the inning with a double and scored on a long single off the wall in left by Seth Loman. A Justin Greene double in the fourth plated another run to make it 2-0.

The Barons would break the game open with five runs in the fifth, highlighted by a Jared Mitchell two-run double, a Damaso Espino two-run single and an RBI single by Greene, chasing Taylor from the game and giving the Barons a 7-1 lead they would not relinquish.

Castro (2-1, 4.26) recorded his second win of the season, allowing two runs on five hits in 7.0 innings while striking out five.

Three Barons finished with three hits including Seth Loman, who was a late addition to the lineup after Andy Wilkins was removed during warm-ups. Loman made the most of his opportunity finishing 3-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI. Greene finished 3-for-4 with two RBI while Espino scored three runs and drove in two while finishing 3-for-4. On the season, the Barons are now a perfect 10-0 when they record ten hits or more.

The Barons also turned a season-high five double plays, the most double plays for a Barons team since September 6th, 2009. The Southern League record for double plays is six.

With the win, the Barons improved to 16-13 and have now won two-straight after dropping the first two games of the series. They will look for their fourth series victory in the last five tomorrow night as Cameron Bayne (3-0, 2.70) takes the hill against Omar Poveda (2-1, 4.34). First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 PM CT.
