Knoxville Smokies News Release
KODAK, Tenn. - A five-run second inning by the Tennessee Smokies, highlighted by Matt Cerda's two-run blast, was not enough to defeat the Montgomery Biscuits Friday night. The Smokies (12-17) dropped their second straight game to the Biscuits (13-16), this time by an 8-7 score in front of 4,783 on Star Wars night at Smokies Park.
The Biscuits got an early run off Tennessee starter Dallas Beeler with a single run in the second when Kyeong Kang scored on a Mark Thomas single.
Tennessee answered in a big way in their half. After a Jonathan Mota double, Cerda crushed a two-run shot to right. Logan Watkins hit an RBI single after back-to-back singles by Nate Samson and Mike Brenly. Jae-Hoon Ha finished off the inning with a two-RBI double down the third base line to give the Smokies a 5-1 lead.
Montgomery answered with a three-run third inning narrowing the Biscuits deficit to 5-4.
Samson doubled and Brenly followed with a single to lead off the fourth and Samson would trot home on an Elliot Soto RBI single to make it 6-4.
The Biscuits would score two more runs to tie the game at six in the fifth and ended the night for Beeler after allowing six run (three earned) on 11 hits with one strikeout in his five innings of work.
Tennessee down 7-6, Justin Bour would tie up the ballgame in seventh with his second home run in as many days.
However, Casey Harman (0-1) was unable to keep Montgomery at bay as Brad Coon ripped an RBI triple to score Kang, which ended up the game winner.
Montgomery reliever Marquis Fleming (2-0) picked up his second win of the series, and Adam Liberatore (S, 2) picked up the save tossing the final two innings.
The Smokies and Biscuits will wrap up the series Saturday night at 6:15 at Smokies Park. Tennessee will send RHP Dae-Eun Rhee (1-1, 5.81) to the mound, while Montgomery will counter with RHP Joe Cruz (2-3, 5.47).
