Birmingham Barons News Release
The Barons scored six runs in the first inning to win their first Tuesday night game, defeating the Mississippi Braves 8-2 at Regions Park.
The Barons offensive barrage all came with two outs in the inning as six-consecutive hitters reached base. John Shelby's three-run home run capped the scoring in the inning and gave starting pitcher Lucas Harrell a sizable 6-0 lead.
Despite the big first inning, Harrell (6-1, 3.56) failed to outlast his pitching counterpart and lasted just five innings. The 23-year old pitcher allowed just five hits and walked only two batters, but he went deep into many counts and threw 93 pitches on the night. He allowed one run on the night en route to earning his league-leading sixth victory of the season.
Jordan Danks continued his hot hitting, supplying three more hits and improving his batting average to a team best .391. The 2008 seventh-round draft pick also added his second home run in the eighth inning.
John Lujan provided three scoreless innings of relief for the Barons. He struck out four during his perfect outing.
Eight Barons recorded a hit in the first inning as 11 men came to the plate. Tyler Flowers added his first hit of the game in the fourth inning, a run-scoring single. It marked the third time in 2009 that every Barons starter has recorded a hit. They last accomplished the feat on April 30 against West Tenn. The team also had every player record a hit on April 29 in Mobile.
The Barons were 0-5 on Tuesdays before the win.
The two teams will both take to the road Wednesday as game two will be played at Rickwood Field. It will mark the 14th year that the Barons honor their former stadium with a throwback game. Tomorrow's festivities will be attended by long-time Braves broadcast, Pete Van Wieren and will honor the 1982 All-Star Game. The first 1,000 fans to enter Rickwood Field will receive a 1982 All-Star Game commemorative ticket.
John Ely (5-1, 3.53) will try to join Harrell in the six-win club while Ryne Reynoso (3-2, 3.73) will try to even the series for the Braves. First pitch is set for 12:35 PM.
