Montgomery Biscuits News Release

ZEBULON, NC - The Carolina Mudcats claimed a see-saw affair, 5-4, from the Biscuits on Tuesday night at Five County Stadium. With the series-opening win, the Mudcats stretched their win-streak to six games.

Fernando Cortez opened the scoring for Montgomery with a solo-home run to the right field corner in the top of the first inning off of Mudcats' starter Alexander Smit. Cortez's second homer in as many days gave the Biscuits a 1-0 lead.

Two unearned runs for the Mudcats in the third inning gave Carolina the lead. Sean Henry's ground ball with one out was misplayed by Jason Bowers to get the rally started and both Zach Cozart and Chris Heisey singled to load the bases. Juan Francisco tied the game with a sacrifice fly to centerfield and Todd Frazier gave the Mudcats their first lead at 2-1 with an RBI single to left field. Both runs charged to Biscuits' starter Ryan Morse were unearned due to the error on Bowers.

The long-ball returned the Biscuits to the lead in the fifth inning. Bowers was walked by Smit ahead of a two-run blast to left field for Desmond Jennings that pushed Montgomery back in front, 3-2.

The Mudcats drew even in the bottom of the inning with a run off of Morse. Henry led off the inning with a double, advanced to third on a single for Cozart and tied the game, 3-3, on a sacrifice fly from Heisey.

Both starters called it a night after five innings and the Biscuits again jumped on top against the first reliever for Carolina, Camilo Vazquez. Rashad Eldridge doubled for the second time in the game with one out, and scored when Drew Anderson doubled a batter later for a 4-3 advantage.

Carolina then reclaimed the lead with two runs off the Biscuits' bullpen in the seventh. Mike Wlodarczyk struck out the first four batters he faced after relieving Morse, but conceded a one-out double to Cozart before departing in favor of Chris Mason (2-2). Mason retired Heisey, but Francisco cracked a game-tying single to right field to score Cozart. Francisco advanced to second on the throw home, and he scored to give Carolina the lead, 6-5, when Todd Frazier singled to left field. Mason was tagged with his second loss of the season for Montgomery.

Logan Ondrusek (1-0) worked two scoreless innings of relief in the seventh and eighth and earned the win for Carolina. Ramon Geronimo earned his third save with a 1-2-3 ninth inning.

Game two of the series is scheduled for 6:15 PM on Wednesday night at Five County Stadium. LHP Brandon Mann (2-2, 5.02) will make the start for Montgomery against RHP Zach Stewart (1-0, 0.00) for Carolina.
